10. Definitions

The difficulty of defining technology presents a challenge in itself. Is it the internet we are talking about; is it an activity conducted on the internet, or do we mean to the technologies used?  Could “real” internet addiction be experienced by a small number of people – those who are not using the medium in any way that could be replicated elsewhere?

Look at dictionary definitions of either word, and find a variety of results. The word addiction is added to a variety of modifying words, such  as gaming, sugar, or exercise in order to give it meaning.

in the same way that the use of the word technology is very often linked to a modifying word –  again an unrelated subject in itself – for  example, information technology, food technology, information technology, or assistive technology. Definitions vary widely depending on the speciality of the dictionary.
