Factors liable to have an effect on use of technology:

• Gender
In the US in 2010 this was noted as no longer a substantial factor in internet use, running at 79% of each.
Digital natives and immigrants (age)
At different times in our lives, it is likely that our ability, available time, and desire to use technologies will change.
• Location
Inevitably, location will affect availability. Current ranges from 10.9% (Africa) to 77.4% (North America)
• Socio-economic group
Pew’s studies show that use is still lower in the lowest income groups.
• Educational attainment
Pew’s studies show that use is still lower in the lowest educational attainment groups.
• Activities using technologies
Which activities are carried out using the technology under investigation – social media, text, chat, games, TV, shopping, gambling, work activities – etc.
• Personality type
We would need to link the study to any specific vulnerability and mental health issues.
• Investigative methods
Did the participants self-select, or were they invited?
• Physical health
We would need to link the study to any specific physical health or access issues.
• Technology development
The development of technologies themselves over an individual’s lifetime. What is available that meets the individual’s current need?
